The Catalina Experience

Every other year, the 3rd/4th grade classes look forward to the year-end field trip to Catalina Island off the coast of southern California. Throughout the 3rd and 4th grade curriculum, much time is spent studying oceanography, astronomy, and geology which culminates in the hands-on learning adventures with the Catalina Experience. The students, their parents, and the teachers all look forward to preparing for this amazing educational opportunity.

Beginning in the Fall, fundraising efforts begin with bake sales, cake walks, garage sales, and other attempts to raise funds to supplement the cost of the Catalina Experience. At least one parent from each family is encouraged to participate in this week-long field trip. Families meet at the Long Beach Queen Mary boat terminal for the boat ride out to the island. After getting settled in the group tents, the 4-day itinerary begins and includes activities such as snorkeling, kayaking, scavenger hunts, and survival classes.

There is a touch tank and aquarium and many hikes around the island, to learn about the geology of the area and study the ecology on the island. Evening programs around the campfire include studying the night sky, skit night, and other fun activities for the students and their families.

The Catalina Experience is a major component of the 3rd and 4th grade curriculum at Primavera, and demonstrates a productive and meaningful interaction among the students, families, and teachers in the Primavera community.
